They beat New Zealand by 96 runs in the 2026 final in Ahmedabad on 8 March, piling up 255 for 5 and bowling New Zealand out for 159. Sanju Samson made 89 from 46 balls, and Jasprit Bumrah took 4 for 15, the first four-wicket haul in a T20 World Cup final. It also made India the first side to defend the trophy.

The finals people remember
2007: India beat Pakistan in the first final
In Johannesburg, Pakistan needed six runs from four balls with one wicket left. Misbah-ul-Haq tried to scoop Joginder Sharma over fine leg and was caught by Sreesanth, giving MS Dhoni’s young side the first T20 world title.
2009: Pakistan’s answer
Two years later Pakistan won the trophy at Lord’s, with Shahid Afridi’s unbeaten half-century seeing off Sri Lanka by eight wickets.
2016: “Remember the name”
West Indies needed 19 from the final over against England in Kolkata. Carlos Brathwaite hit Ben Stokes for four sixes in a row to seal a second title.
2024: India end an 11-year wait
South Africa needed 30 from 30 balls in Barbados with six wickets left. India’s bowlers pulled it back, and Suryakumar Yadav’s catch on the boundary off the last over sealed a seven-run win.
2026: India’s record third title
At home in Ahmedabad, where they had lost the 50-over World Cup final in 2023, India produced the most one-sided final in the tournament’s history.
How the T20 World Cup works
Since 2024 the tournament has 20 teams in four groups of five. The top two from each group go into the Super 8, split into two groups of four, and the top two from each Super 8 group reach the semi-finals. It is held every two years.
