Finals that defined the IPL
2008: Rajasthan Royals, the first champions
Shane Warne captained a squad with few star names and beat Chennai Super Kings off the last ball of the first IPL final.
2017 and 2019: Mumbai win twice by one run
Mumbai Indians won two finals by the smallest possible margin. In 2019, Lasith Malinga trapped Shardul Thakur lbw with the final ball to beat Chennai.
2023: Chennai’s fifth title on the last ball
Rain pushed the final into a reserve day and cut Chennai’s target. Needing ten from the last two balls, Ravindra Jadeja hit a six and a four to draw level with Mumbai on five titles.
2025 and 2026: RCB finally win, then win again
After losing finals in 2009, 2011 and 2016, Bengaluru beat Punjab Kings by six runs in 2025 for their first title. They retained it a year later against Gujarat Titans, with Kohli the player of the match.
How the IPL works
Ten franchises play a league stage between March and May. The top four go into the playoffs: first plays second in Qualifier 1, with the winner going straight to the final; third plays fourth in the Eliminator; and the loser of Qualifier 1 meets the Eliminator winner in Qualifier 2 for the other final place.
