The story of the match
Ibrahim Zadran had made 129 not out, Afghanistan’s first World Cup hundred, to set a target of 292. Afghanistan’s bowlers tore through Australia’s top order, and a famous upset looked certain.
Maxwell was dropped on 33. From there he took over, hitting 21 fours and 10 sixes while Pat Cummins blocked at the other end, scoring 12 off 68 balls. Even when cramp left him barely able to run, Maxwell stood still and hit boundaries, finishing with a six to win the match.
