The story of the match
New Zealand made 241 for 8 on a slow pitch, with Henry Nicholls scoring 55. England slipped to 86 for 4, before Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler rebuilt with a century stand.
In the final over, with England needing nine from three balls, a throw from Martin Guptill hit Stokes’s diving bat and ran away for four overthrows, giving England six runs from the ball. They finished on 241 all out, scores level.
In the super over England made 15. New Zealand also made 15, Jimmy Neesham hitting a six, but Guptill was run out by Buttler going for a second run off the last ball. England won because they had hit more boundaries in the match.
Key moments to watch for
- Stokes and Buttler’s rescue stand
- The deflected overthrow in the last over
- Stokes finishes on 84 not out
- Neesham’s six in the super over
- Guptill run out off the final ball
Why it’s one of the greatest cricket matches ever
No final in any sport has ended quite like it. The ICC later changed the rules so that tied super overs are followed by another super over rather than a boundary count, which makes this result unique.
