The story of the match
For 79 minutes it looked like a comfortable Argentina win. Messi scored a penalty after Ángel Di María was fouled, and Di María finished a sweeping counter-attack to make it 2-0 before half-time. France had barely touched the ball in Argentina’s box.
Then Kylian Mbappé changed everything. He scored a penalty in the 80th minute and, about a minute and a half later, volleyed in an equaliser. In extra time Messi bundled in what looked like the winner, but Mbappé scored another penalty with two minutes left to complete the first hat-trick in a World Cup final since Geoff Hurst in 1966.
There was still time for Emiliano Martínez to make a famous save from Randal Kolo Muani in the last seconds. In the shoot-out Martínez saved from Kingsley Coman, Aurélien Tchouaméni missed, and Gonzalo Montiel scored the winning kick.
Key moments to watch for
- Messi penalty and Di María’s team goal put Argentina 2-0 up at half-time
- Mbappé scores twice in about 97 seconds to make it 2-2
- Messi makes it 3-2 in extra time
- Mbappé completes his hat-trick from the spot
- Martínez’s late save, then Montiel’s winning penalty
Why it’s one of the greatest football matches ever
It was Argentina’s third World Cup, after 1978 and 1986, and Messi’s first. Messi won the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament and Mbappé took the Golden Boot with eight goals. Few finals have had this much quality and drama in the same 120 minutes.
